Legal Counsel
Join KCB as an in-house Legal Counsel and play a pivotal role in shaping the legal framework for a global leader in engineering and environmental consulting!
At KCB, our purpose is Sustaining the Future. We bring this to life through practical, risk‑informed solutions to complex environmental and engineering challenges. Guided by our values of Passion, Integrity, and Excellence, we focus on building trusted relationships, delivering high‑quality work, and supporting our clients and communities over the long term.
Who We’re Looking For
As part of our ongoing growth strategy, we are seeking an in‑house Legal Counsel to be based in our Brisbane office. Reporting to the General Counsel and working closely with internal stakeholders locally and internationally, this role plays a key part in maintaining strong governance, managing risk, and supporting compliant project delivery. The position also contributes to the ongoing development and consistency of legal practices across the region.
What You Will Do
KCB is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion and offers flexible hybrid working arrangements. In this role, you will:
Provide legal support across the pursuit, negotiation, and delivery stages of construction and engineering projects using a variety of delivery models across public and private markets.
Draft, review, and maintain KCB‑generated client and subcontractor agreements, ensuring best‑practice standards are applied.
Support the business with daily contract reviews and commercial legal advice.
Manage claims and disputes in collaboration with insurers and appointed external legal counsel.
Develop, maintain, and manage contract templates and legal frameworks.
Act as a trusted legal advisor to business units including Power and Transportation, Mining, Environmental and Infrastructure.
Collaborate with the General Counsel, disputes counsel, and risk management team to provide strategic input on claims and disputes.
Monitor legal and contracting trends within the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) industry.
Work collaboratively across the Legal, Compliance and IMS teams to develop and implement policies and processes that improve efficiency and risk management.
Assist in developing and delivering legal and contract‑related training for business units and project teams.
Provide general legal advice and support as required.
What You Bring
We value the knowledge and experience you have gained to date and are committed to supporting your continued development. The following qualifications and attributes are required:
Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB or JD) from an accredited law school.
Admission to practise law in Western Australia or Queensland (or equivalent), and in good standing.
Minimum of 3 years’ post‑admission experience, either in‑house or within a reputable law firm.
Strong, pragmatic communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
Ability to work independently while collaborating across multidisciplinary teams to resolve complex issues.
Excellent organisational and time‑management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and high workloads while exercising sound commercial judgment.
Proven ability to operate effectively within a team environment.
A genuine interest in engineering, environmental and geoscience services.
Strong aptitude for identifying and managing legal and commercial risk.
What Makes You Stand Out
In addition to the above, you will be particularly well suited to the role if you have:
Experience negotiating and drafting complex agreements within the EPC industry.
Exposure to dispute resolution proceedings or litigation.
Experience or familiarity with legislation in other common‑law jurisdictions where KCB operates, such as PNG, Canada, the UK, Ireland, or the USA.
