Intermediate Mechanical Engineer - Resource & Balance of Plant

An opportunity exists for an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer to join Klohn Crippen Berger’s Power and Transportation Group based in Vancouver. At KCB, the mechanical group focuses primarily on hydroelectric and resource sector projects. Resource projects include large tailings delivery pumping and cyclones systems. Hydroelectric projects include large and medium scale hydropower projects which require balance of plant and HVAC systems.
The KCB mechanical group has enough experience to allow mentorship of career and technical advancement, but is small enough that we have a close-knit team who regularly work together.
Typical Projects:
- Slurry transport systems and cyclones for domestic and international mining clients.
- Tailings storage facilities which require tailings distribution, reclaim, well forefield systems.
- Overland tailings and water pipelines; including siphons.
- Design of new hydroelectric facilities.
- Refurbishments and upgrades to hydroelectric facilities, including balance plant mechanical systems.
- Design of large water control gates.
- Tunnels including fire suppression and emergency ventilation systems.
- Marine and port facilities.
Typical Services:
- Mechanical design from concept to final design
- Process design for cyclone sand production and mass balance studies.
- Hydraulic grade lines and operating envelopes for new mine and for mine life extensions.
- Transient hydraulic studies.
- Pipe stress calculations.
- Pipelines anchor load definition.
- Preparation of design deliverables (drawings, specs, estimates, schedules, reports, etc.)
- Site investigations and construction monitoring.
- Upgrades and refurbishment of existing installations.
- Design of pumping systems, piping, heating, and ventilation systems for hydro and industrial clients.
- Be the lead for multi-discipline projects which includes the definition and coordination of the requirements for structural, geotechnical and electrical/instrumentation/controls disciplines.
This role will give you the opportunity to:
- Work on facility-wide or major component refurbishments for hydroelectric plants, cranes and pumping systems.
- Work with diverse teams of multidiscipline engineers, designers and drafters from preliminary investigations and conceptual design through preliminary design, final design and construction.
- Oversee project management activities, including budgeting, resource planning, timelines, and deliverables.
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients, providing technical advice and ensuring clear communication throughout the project lifecycle.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 5 - 10 years of related experience
- Registered P.Eng with EGBC, or eligibility to apply within 6-months
- Strong working knowledge of Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) tailings delivery technics, tailing rheology and AFT Impulse transient software.
- MSWord, Excel, Mathcad, Plant 3D, Inventor, SolidWorks and hydraulic design software.
- Ability to technically review the work of others while providing effective feedback.
- Heating ventilation and air conditioning calculations.
- Ability to coordinate and lead multi-discipline projects.
- An ability to foster relationships, cultivating client engagement and team support.
The salary for this position is $100,000 to $120,000 per year. Salary is based on applicable experience, education, and skill level.
